Making a Horse Menage
Building yourself a horse menage for training is quite simple and doesn’t necessarily have to cost a lot. Many different companies exist which can provide the necessary materials to create a ménage which will withstand most weather. Of course, some materials will cope with different weather better than others. Also, the area you choose to site the horse ménage will influence the materials you buy.
The first thing to decide is obviously where to site the horse ménage. 20 x 40 metres is considered an average size, but high level tests use bigger spaces. A good size circular horse ménage should be 20 metres in diameter. Obviously, the site you select has to be able to accommodate this much space. Try to position the ménage away from areas used for grazing animals. Although the ménage will be surrounded by horse fencing, there is too much chance that nearby animals will distract the horse you’re trying to school.
Obviously, flat land is preferable for draining and ease of use. The drainage is the factor which will most affect the usability of your horse ménage. Drainage keeps the ménage dry, and therefore usable because it won’t freeze over. The soil type in your chosen area will play a massive role in drainage, some soils provide easy drainage naturally but others do not. A membrane may be necessary but not always. Bear in mind that applying them incorrectly could make them rip.
Choosing your surface will be a big decision too. Sand is the most common surface but many horse ménages also use fake grass or wood fibre. Whichever you decide to go for, be sure that it’s at lease four inches in depth.
Your horse ménage fencing is also important. This can be bought from many stockists.
