Many dogs when they begin leash training like to bite and attack their leash. This is not a hard habit to break but the sooner your pet learns his leash is not toy the better.
The fastest way to break this habit especially if you are working with a young dog is to put something foul tasting on the leash. Many people find that bitter apple works. Or you might try using the hottest sauce you can find. As long as your dog hates the taste he wont be biting the leash.
Another method to try, is the moment he starts stop biting the leash give the “no’ command. And then remove the leash from the dog’s mouth. You may have to stop a number of times but be consistent. Remember to reward the dog when he displays the correct behaviour.
If your dog is familiar with other dog commands such as the ‘leave it’ command use this. Tell your dog firmly to ‘leave it’, and take the leash out of his mouth. Reward and praise, especially if he drops the leash on his own.
